The Cima Corgo region is located between the confluence of the Corgo River with the Douro River downstream and the confluence of the Torto River with the Douro upstream. The Torto River valley, which originates from the granite plateau near Trancoso and flows through a deep, winding valley before emptying into the Douro, provides significant variation in vine exposure and a microclimate felt between 450 and 700 meters in altitude, creating conditions that lead to some of the best wines from the Cima Corgo region.
At the confluence of the Torto and Távora rivers with the Douro, lies Quinta do Seixo. Acquired from Casa Ferreira by Sogrape in 1987 and covering approximately 100 hectares, Quinta do Seixo’s production is based on 65 hectares of selected vineyards, replanted on terraces and using a high vineyard system, ideal for areas with gentle slopes. Sogrape, through the Sandeman brand, offers a guided tour of the winery, the wine cellar, and the robotic presses, complemented by multimedia presentations that explain the entire wine production cycle and a tasting of selected Port wines in a room with a panoramic view of the Douro.
Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, located on the right bank of the Douro, dates back to 1764. In 1999, it was acquired by the Amorim family, which began the redevelopment of the space and the focus on producing quality wines in a chosen terroir. This led to the creation of Portugal’s first wine hotel – the Hotel Rural Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, established in 2005 from the reconstruction of the old 19th-century manor house, in complete harmony with nature and tradition. Here, reference table wines are produced, internationally awarded, made in fully mechanized presses in a modern winery and a subterranean barrel room where iconic and premium wines are aged and can be tasted in a room with a panoramic view: these include “Quinta Nova”, “Grainha”, “Pomares”, and “Mirabilis”, as well as Port wines. Olive oil, jams, and gourmet teas are also produced.
