The Naturtejo Geopark of the Southern Meseta, Portugal’s first geopark, is a designated area that became part of the European Geoparks Network in 2000 and the UNESCO Global Geoparks Program in 2006. It bridges various dimensions of the territory, such as Biodiversity, History, Culture, and Intangible Heritage, and is grounded in sustainable development principles. This involves geodiversity, environmental protection, responsible use of natural resources, community engagement, and preservation. The park emphasizes the interconnectedness of natural and cultural heritage, promoting the sustainable development of the region.

The Naturtejo Geopark spans a vast territory of 5,000 km², covering the municipalities of Castelo Branco, Idanha-a-Nova, Penamacor, Proença-a-Nova, Nisa, Oleiros, and Vila Velha de Ródão. Its mission focuses on geoconservation, education, and geotourism, all rooted in the area’s significant geological heritage, which serves as the foundation for the region’s sustainable development. This rich geomorphological, geological, paleontological, and geomining heritage includes elements of national and international significance, such as the ichnofossils of Penha Garcia, the river canyons of Penha Garcia, Portas do Ródão, and Almourão, and the Roman gold mine of Conhal do Arneiro.

The trails we’ll take, starting with one in the Almourão Valley near the mouth of the Cobrão River and the Portas do Ródão Natural Monument, highlight the importance of the landscape and biodiversity, particularly the colony of griffon vultures that nest and reside there, which we’ll have the opportunity to observe.

The visit wouldn’t be complete without a magnificent boat trip along the Tejo River near Portas do Ródão, offering a chance to contemplate this unique site, shaped by the chemical transformation and erosion of rocks over millions of years.

Sharpen your senses and let yourself be surprised by the spring aromas that fill the air. Come along!…
