The Sabor River is one of the last wild rivers in Europe, where nature remains virtually untouched. The Sabor Valley is classified as a Special Protection Area and is part of the Natura 2000 Network. In addition to its rich fauna, which includes otters, water shrews, vultures, black storks, and golden eagles, the floodplains are characterized by an exceptionally well-preserved shrub community, including boxwood. Several NGOs have attempted to stop the dam’s construction granted to EDP, claiming that it could endanger a wide range of unique habitats and the memory of a singular landscape that deserves preservation. The first hike begins near the Remondes Bridge, built in 1678 by the Távora family, which will be submerged; the second hike will be in Larinho, Torre de Moncorvo, near the dam construction site, close to the mouth of the Sabor River. We will also have the opportunity to revisit the best of the region’s cuisine: dishes made with churra lamb from Terra Quente, Terrincho cheese, and almond-based sweets, especially the well-known “cobertas” almonds from Torre de Moncorvo.
