The diverse orientation of the terrain, sudden changes in altitude, and the intertwining climatic influences give rise to a multitude of microclimates. These, combined with the predominantly granite composition of the soil and the constructive action of humans over centuries, create very distinctive botanical and landscape characteristics in this area, which is called the “Portuguese Tibet” due to the beauty of its characteristic terraces.

On the warmer, sheltered slopes of the valleys, you can find species such as Cork Oak, Strawberry Tree, Wild Medlar, the Gerês Fern, Royal Fern, and Mountain Grape. In areas more influenced by the Atlantic climate and at altitudes up to 800-1000 meters, you’ll encounter forests of Common Oak, often associated with Holly. Above 1300 meters, the Common Oak sometimes takes on a tree-like form and, in some cases, forms true forests on its own.

Above 900 meters, the Common Oak is replaced by the Black Oak, with the occurrence of European White Elm, a species characteristic of the Euro-Siberian zone. Other species like the Corka Pine and Yew can be found at higher altitudes, in the damper, sheltered valleys, representing remnants of a post-glacial flora where the presence of the Garrano horse is common.
