The Azibo River, a tributary of the Sabor River, is the source of the Sabor Dam, which was built in the early 1980s. This dam creates an ecosystem conducive to numerous species of migratory birds, attracting many ornithologists and nature enthusiasts throughout the year. The Azibo Protected Landscape Area is part of the Natura 2000 Network.
The Sabor Valley, classified as a Special Protection Area and part of the Natura 2000 Network, is one of the last wild rivers in Europe. Several NGOs have tried to prevent its construction due to the risk it poses to a vast array of unique habitats and the memory of the landscape. The change in the landscape is particularly noticeable to those who took a similar route in 2013, starting near the Ponte de Remondes, now submerged. The route in Larinho, Torre de Moncorvo, will reveal the same untouched landscape of the wild Sabor as it flows into the Douro. We will end at the table with the best of the region’s cuisine: the numerous dishes of Terra Quente Churra lamb, Terrincho cheese, and almond-based sweets, especially the well-known “cobertas” almonds from Torre de Moncorvo. This heritage is what VIDABOA invites you to discover.
Come along!…”
